Simple, Step-by-Step Instructions to all there is to the Canva Drawing Tool!

When creating design elements for your business or website, it is easy to turn around and suddenly realise you have 100 different applications and programs that all do just one thing for you. And they are great... but they are MANY!

  • postermywall for your posters
  • adobe for your flyers
  • Drawtify for you general art
  • onlinetoPDF for your handouts
  • venngage for your brochures
  • visme for your presentations
  • Lucidchart for your planning and charts

and... the... list... goes... ON!!!

But there is one tool that will do all this (and more) and you can do it all FOR FREE!!

Canva!!

You can find other articles and videos about how to use Canva’s tools in the links at the bottom of this page, but today we are looking at their drawing tool. This will be a comprehensive article, so we are not created a particular design, that would only lend itself to using some of the features.

As you may know, Canva has a free and a paid version, and you will be pleased to know that the Canva draw tool is part of the free version, yeah! so if you do not have a Canva account, you can sign-up for free.

So let's get into it!

(If you are interested in using Canva on your mobile device and would like to see this demonstrated on the Canva app, just click here for a short video!)

Step 1 - Locate the Drawing Tool Icon on the Left Side Menu

Once you have created your new design at the dimensions that you would like, you will see on the left side of your screen your navigation menu. Find the drawing tool and click to open. You will see this smaller menu appear. These are your drawing options.

The options you will see include the pen tool, marker tool, highlighter tool, eraser tool, color picker and settings.

Step 2 - The Settings

We will jump down to the setting first, as this is where you can adjust the pen, marker, highlighter and the eraser tools thickness and transparency. You can see below examples of different weights (thinner and thicker line) for each of the tools. You can experiment with the different design tools on you own designs to see what looks the best to you.

Step 3 - The Colors

To change the colour of the pen, marker or highlighter, click on the tool you want and then click on the colour block. You will first notice the bar of default colors as they draw your attention, but do not worry, you can chose from all the colors of the rainbow. Here's how!

When you click on the color tool you will see, above the default colours the color palette. Click on this and it will open up your color selector where you can choose from any color you desire, or even copy in a hex code if you know the exact color you are needing.

Step 4 - The Eraser Tool

Be careful with the eraser tool! It will erase the whole stroke of a pen/marker/highlighter with one click. This is not a click and drag tool, though I hope someday in the future it will be!

Extra Fun Stuff!

Some extra things you can do with draw to take your drawings to the next level.

Besides the navigation on the left side of the screen, you will also see a navigation pane across the top of your screen that will change depending on what you are doing. When you have an element selected in on the canvas you are drawing on the options in this top navigation will look like this:

The first Square is the current color of the highlighted element and by clicking on this you are able to change an element color to any color of the rainbow. When you click on this icon you will see a left menu appear and you can then choose the color. You can even choose a colour gradient if you wish, even for your hand-drawn elements!

The second item is the Animation Effects. With this you can cause your element to enter or exit using motion. Your element can slide in or out, bounce in or out, fade in or out and many more. You do have to pay the additional cost for Canva Pro if you want to dictate the speed at which the animation moves, but in the free version you are still able to get some cool effects. Just make sure to export your Canva designs as .gif or .mp4 if you have included animation effect.

These are a GREAT way to grab attention!

The next one along the top toolbar is the Element position. This is not the position up or down or side to side, but rather what elements are in front of other elements. when you click on this you can see you can move your elements forwards or backwards on the page. You can see in these two images I have the draw here. Image one shows the green in front.

But is I want the blue in front, I can simply send the green backwards (or bring the blue forwards).

Cool!

And if I want the blue to be in front, but the green to show through a bit, I can change the transparency of the blue!

The little paint roller will allow you to copy the style of something (in this case the color) to somewhere else. Here I have copied the color blue onto the next page.

And the last element is the 'lock'. You are able to lock elements into place as you add others to your canvas.

As you explore this amazing tool in Canva you will be able to create any desired effect that you need for your website or business. Use to add own personal touch for social media posts, business cards, and even your digital drawings or school project.
